Artistic Statement

Who are you? How did we get here? Can we go somewhere together? In the moment of transformation, how did you decide which way to turn? Can I love you? Is love enough?

My love of playwriting is rooted in asking questions. I am intrigued by people who feel as if they live between worlds, whether it be between cultures, languages, physical borders, ethnicities, sexualities, etc. I, myself, could be labeled many different “characters” (writer, mother, wife) but never do I feel as if I am ever one persona. Characters need to be more complex. What's between those layers? I am drawn to examine the female identity and how that experience in the world changes over time. I hope that my plays will engage an audience as much as they excite me, because all of my plays are sparked from real life: a strange word choice, a scene witnessed, a moment that keeps me up at night... While I edit another draft, I always search for the comedy in drama because the scary truths about ourselves are often hard pills to swallow.

While I am an emerging writer ( whatever "emerging" means... ) I am not new to the theatre. I began acting as a teenager, after I moved from rural Oregon to Helsinki, Finland. After traipsing around Europe for several years, I finally landed in NYC, to further pursue a life in the theatre arts. These experiences fuel my desire to tell stories. I was an actor, director, teacher, and a playwright. Most recently, graduate school helped to focus my craft and develop my voice as a writer. I have now created several short plays, monologues, full-length plays, and also learned the skills of screenwriting.

I am looking for theater companies to collaborate with, who also value inclusion, and the power of storytelling.

Thank you. Sincerely, Sofia Molimbi
